The Hard Conversations Script Library

The conversation you're avoiding,
scripted word for word.

The raise. The bad review. Giving notice. Telling your boss you're drowning. Twelve conversations most people put off for years, each one scripted: the opener, their most likely comebacks, your counters, and the close that gets something decided.

"Where do I actually stand?"

Every script has the same anatomy

You memorize the opener and the close. The middle is ammunition for a live conversation, not a flowchart.

1

Walk in knowing

When to have the conversation, what you're actually asking for, and the prep that makes it winnable before you say a word.

2

The opener

Your first sentence, word for word. The one you say out loud three times before you walk in, so the room never hears your first draft.

3

They'll say / you say

Their three most likely comebacks, each with your counter. The pushback stops being scary once you've already read it.

4

The close

The last sentence, the one that makes sure something actually got decided and lands it in writing the same day.

5

Don't say

The lines that feel natural in the moment and quietly lose the conversation, with the reason each one backfires.

6

If it goes sideways

The recovery line for when it doesn't go to plan, since sometimes it won't.

Where this comes from

I've spent 20+ years leading teams at places like Zillow and CBS, and 10,000+ hours coaching working people through these exact conversations. The raise ask, the notice, the boundary with the client who texts at 11pm: I've prepped people for all of them, sat on the manager's side of most of them, and watched what works and what quietly backfires. These scripts are what I actually tell people, written down so you have them the night before.

Fair questions

Am I supposed to recite these like lines in a play?

No. You memorize two sentences per conversation: the opener and the close. Everything in between is ammunition you adapt to your own voice. The library opens with a one-page guide on exactly how to use it.

Will this work with my specific boss / client / coworker?

The comebacks in each script are the ones that come up over and over in real coaching sessions. Your situation will have its own wrinkles, and that's fine: the skeleton of every hard conversation is the same. State it plainly, make one ask, handle the pushback, land the close.

What do I actually get?

One 27-page PDF: all twelve scripts plus the how-to-use guide. Instant download after checkout, yours forever, readable on anything.

I'm a Signal subscriber. Should I still buy this?

They work together. The library is the playbook on paper; Signal is live prep for your specific situation, plus the check-in after the real conversation. Plenty of subscribers will want both, neither requires the other.

What if it doesn't help?

If the library doesn't make your next hard conversation easier, reply to your receipt email and I'll refund you. Simple as that.

Six months of dread, or twenty minutes of awkward.

Every one of these conversations costs less than avoiding it. Pick the one you've been putting off longest and walk in prepared.
