3 Career Truths I Wish I Knew Sooner

If I could go back and have one brutally honest conversation with my younger self, it wouldn't be about grinding out hard work or staying the course. It would be about getting crystal clear on what my goals were and then getting laser-focused on taking the risks associated with going the pace needed to achieve them.

There are things I didn't know because no one told me. But there are other things I didn't know because I wasn't aware of my own risk tolerance. I assumed the path would sort of appear based on all the effort and time spent working hard. I assumed someone would pull me aside and say, "Here's what's next for you." Eventually, you learn that moment doesn't come, and you have to go find it yourself.

The best thing that ever happened to me was that I didn't get a promotion. It taught me that nobody was ever going to come rescue me and that I would have to own and control my destiny going forward.

Truth #1: Your Manager Isn't Your Career Planner

You are. They're not sitting up at night wondering how to help you grow. They're busy managing their own chaos. I wasted years waiting for some sort of signal or green light to make moves, and all it did was delay my growth. The people who move fastest in their careers are the ones who make their own roadmap. Even if it's messy. Even if it changes along the way.

Truth #2: There's No Bonus for Being Miserable

There's no trophy for sticking it out at a job that drains you. Too many people convince themselves that staying is noble, that things will get better, that if they're loyal, the company will be loyal back. But it doesn't work like that. Companies don't reward suffering. They reward strategy.

If you're consistently unhappy, don't give it another five years of your life. I know it's scary to jump. But you know what's even scarier? Wasting a decade trying to fix something that was never meant for you in the first place.

Truth #3: I Wish I Had Bet on Myself Sooner

I played safe for too long. I thought promotions and recognition would come in a nice, clean order. But that version doesn't exist. Not anymore.

The people who win are the ones who take risks before they feel ready. The ones who raise their hand before they have it all figured out. The ones who make the leap even when they can't quite see the landing. I kept waiting for certainty, for approval, for signs. But the signs are never clear until after you've moved.

Every breakthrough in my career came from one decision: trusting myself a little more than I trusted the system. When it was time to leave the media business, I trusted that I could go figure it out in real estate. When it was time to leave a safe, comfortable tech company, I trusted I could go figure it out abroad.

So if you're sitting around hoping things will change, hoping someone will finally see you, hoping your career will magically level up without making a move... it won't. Stop waiting. Start choosing. The version of you that you're chasing is already inside. You just have to give them the green light.
