Feeling Stuck

You Don’t Have to Wait Until January

Something about January makes people feel like they have permission to start over. New year. New goals. New habits. New career plan. New version of themselves. We have somehow convinced ourselves that January 1st is this magical reset button where everything suddenly becomes possible again.

But why?

Today is October 1st. It works just as well.

If you are unhappy in your job, you don't need to wait three months to start looking for something different. If you have been thinking about updating your resume, start tonight. If you want to build your network, send someone a message tomorrow morning. If you have been telling yourself you need to learn a new skill, take the first class this week. None of those things require a new calendar year.

We put way too much power into dates. Monday becomes the day we're going to start working out. Next month becomes the month we're going to save more money. January becomes the month we're finally going to get serious about our career. Meanwhile, weeks and months continue to pass while we wait for some arbitrary date to tell us it is finally time to begin.

Your career doesn't care what month it is.

One of the biggest mistakes we make is believing change has to start with some massive commitment. It doesn't. You don't have to wake up tomorrow morning and completely reinvent your life. You just have to do one thing differently than you did today. One application. One conversation. One hour of learning. One uncomfortable decision that moves you a little closer to where you want to go.

You just have to do one thing differently than you did today.

There are still three full months left in this year. Think about how much can happen in three months. You could interview for a job you don't even know exists today. You could meet someone who changes the direction of your career. You could start writing, networking, building something, or learning something that puts you in a completely different position by January.

The funny part is that if you start now, January actually becomes a lot more interesting. Instead of showing up on January 1st with another list of things you hope to accomplish, you could show up with momentum. You could already be three months into the habit. Three months into the job search. Three months into building your network. Three months into becoming better at whatever it is you know you need to improve.

We spend so much time waiting for the perfect moment to make changes in our lives and careers, but the perfect moment usually looks a lot like a random Wednesday morning. There is no countdown clock. Nobody is going to hand you a permission slip. At some point, you just decide that what you have today isn't what you want tomorrow, and you start doing something about it.

So stop waiting for January. October 1st works just fine. Tomorrow morning works even better. The calendar doesn't decide when your next chapter begins. You do.
