Signal is an AI-powered SMS career coaching service operated by Scott Bond (thescottbond.com). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use Signal.
1. Who We Are
Signal is operated by Scott Bond, an individual career coach doing business as thescottbond.com, based in Seattle, Washington. You can contact us at scott@thescottbond.com.
2. Information We Collect
When you use Signal, we collect the following types of information:
- Your phone number, collected when you opt in to receive SMS messages from Signal.
- Your first name and email address, collected at subscription checkout for account management and customer support.
- Message content, meaning the text messages you send to Signal and the responses we send back are stored to maintain conversation history and improve your experience.
- A short-lived 4-digit activation code, generated at the time of subscription and stored until you use it to bind your phone number to your account. Codes that are not used within a reasonable period expire automatically.
- Subscription identifiers, including your Stripe customer ID, Stripe subscription ID, subscription status, and related timestamps. We use these to manage billing state and grant or revoke access.
- Usage data, including timestamps of messages sent and received.
- Approximate location and timezone, meaning the city, state or province, and country that our SMS carrier (Twilio) reports with each inbound message. We use this solely to determine your timezone so that scheduled messages (morning messages, weekly reviews, and check-ins or reminders you set with Signal) arrive at an appropriate local time for you. We do not collect precise GPS location.
- Consent record, meaning we retain the timestamp and content of the activation-code text you sent from your mobile phone (which is your affirmative SMS opt-in), and we rely on Stripe’s checkout records (which include your IP address for the payment session) as supporting evidence of consent. If you joined Signal through a free trial started by texting a keyword (such as TRIAL) rather than through checkout, the keyword text you sent from your phone serves as your affirmative opt-in, and we retain its timestamp and content as your consent record. This combined record is maintained for legal compliance under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and is retained for a minimum of four years following cancellation of your subscription.
We do not collect payment information directly. Any payments are processed through Stripe and are governed by Stripe's privacy policy at stripe.com/privacy.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Deliver SMS coaching messages and responses in the Signal service
- Personalize coaching content based on your career profile and conversation history
- Send proactive morning check-in messages unless you have opted out of them (text MORNING OFF)
- Improve the quality and relevance of Signal's AI responses
- Communicate with you about your subscription and account
Human review: Conversations with Signal may be reviewed by Scott Bond or our team for quality assurance, safety, customer support, and to improve Signal's coaching. We also generate internal operational summaries (for example, daily reports of activations, goals set, scheduled check-ins, and service errors) that may include limited excerpts of conversations. These summaries are used solely to operate, support, and improve Signal and are never shared externally.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your information for advertising purposes unrelated to Signal.
4. SMS Messaging: Specific Disclosures
Signal uses SMS text messaging as its primary communication channel. By opting in to Signal, you expressly consent to receive recurring automated text messages from Signal at the phone number you provide.
- Message frequency: Message frequency varies. You may receive a daily morning message, a weekly Friday review, and check-in or reminder messages that you schedule with Signal during your conversations, plus responses to messages you initiate. You may also receive an occasional check-in if you have not texted Signal in a while, an occasional feedback survey (a few times per year), and occasional service announcements. Each proactive message type can be turned off individually (text MORNING OFF, FRIDAY OFF, or FOLLOWUPS OFF; MORNING OFF also turns off inactivity check-ins), or stop all messages by texting STOP.
- Message and data rates: Standard message and data rates from your wireless carrier may apply.
- Opt-out: You can opt out of SMS messages at any time by texting STOP to the Signal number. You will receive one final confirmation message and no further messages will be sent.
- Opt-in / opt back in: Subscribe to Signal at thescottbond.com/signal. After payment, you will receive a 4-digit activation code by email. Texting that code from your mobile phone to the Signal number is your affirmative opt-in to receive recurring SMS messages from Signal. If you have previously opted out, you can opt back in by texting START to the Signal number.
- Help: Text HELP to the Signal number for assistance, or email scott@thescottbond.com.
5. How We Share Your Information
We share your information only in the following limited circumstances:
- Twilio, our SMS delivery provider for paid Signal subscribers. Twilio processes your phone number and message content to deliver texts on our behalf. Twilio's privacy policy is available at twilio.com/legal/privacy.
- SimpleTexting, our legacy SMS delivery provider for free-tier subscribers who joined before paid Signal launched, and for ongoing testing. SimpleTexting processes your phone number and message content to deliver texts on our behalf. SimpleTexting's privacy policy is available at simpletexting.com/privacy-policy.
- Anthropic, the AI provider that powers Signal's responses. Message content is sent to Anthropic's API to generate coaching responses. Anthropic's privacy policy is available at anthropic.com/privacy.
- Stripe, our payment processor. Stripe handles subscription billing, payment method storage, sales tax calculation, and customer self-service through the Stripe Customer Portal. We share your name, email address, and phone number with Stripe for account management. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.
- Resend, our transactional email provider. Resend delivers your activation email, welcome sequence emails, and customer portal access emails on our behalf, and carries internal operational notifications to our team (such as flagged conversations, survey responses, and service reports, which may include message content you have sent to Signal). Resend's privacy policy is available at resend.com/legal/privacy-policy.
- Netlify, our website host and infrastructure provider. Conversation history, user profiles, consent records, and subscription allowlist data are stored in Netlify Blobs, a secure storage service operated by Netlify. Netlify's privacy policy is available at netlify.com/privacy.
- OpenAI, for generating semantic embeddings used in conversation recall in the optional Signal web chat. This does not apply to SMS subscribers; SMS subscribers’ messages never touch OpenAI. Only short message snippets are sent for embedding; no identifying information is shared. OpenAI's privacy policy is available at openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.
- Google Analytics, for anonymous page-view tracking on the Signal sales and demo pages. We do not pass personally identifying information to Google. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.
- Meta Platforms, Inc. (Instagram and Facebook), for measuring the effectiveness of Signal ads. The Meta Pixel is installed on the Signal sales pages (signal.html, signal-success.html) and across the rest of this site. When you visit those pages, the Pixel records a page view. When you complete a Signal subscription purchase, a Purchase event is sent to Meta with the dollar value of the purchase. If you submit a form on this site (such as the contact form or the newsletter signup), hashed identifiers (email, phone, name fragments) may also be sent to Meta to improve ad attribution. Your SMS conversation content with Signal is never sent to Meta. Meta's privacy policy is available at facebook.com/privacy/policy. To opt out of Meta tracking on this site, go to Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information.
- Legal requirements, if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or the public.
We do not sell your personal information for money. Under California law (CCPA/CPRA), the term "sharing" specifically includes sending identifiers to advertising platforms for cross-context behavioral advertising, even when no money changes hands. Because of the Meta Pixel described above, we engage in "sharing" as that term is defined under California law, and California residents have the right to opt out at Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information.
Mobile Information & SMS Opt-In Data
No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Information sharing to subcontractors in support of our services is permitted (such as our SMS delivery providers Twilio and SimpleTexting, which transmit messages on our behalf). All other use case categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.
Specifically, your phone number and your SMS opt-in consent record are never sold, rented, traded, or shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes under any circumstances. This includes Meta: the phone number you use to text Signal is never sent to Meta Platforms. The Meta Pixel only sees information you submit into forms on this website. The phone number you opt in with by texting the Signal SMS number does not flow into any web form and is never available to Meta.
6. Data Retention
We retain your conversation history and profile information for as long as you maintain an active Signal subscription. Conversation history and user profile data are stored in Netlify Blobs, indexed by your phone number in E.164 format.
If you cancel your subscription, your account record, conversation history, and profile data are retained until you request deletion. To request deletion, email scott@thescottbond.com and we will process the request within 30 days, except for SMS consent records, which are retained for the four-year TCPA period regardless of deletion requests.
Your SMS opt-in consent record (the timestamp and content of your activation-code text from your phone, together with Stripe’s checkout records, which include the IP address used during payment) is retained for a minimum of four years following cancellation, in compliance with the four-year statute of limitations under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).
You may request deletion of your conversation history and profile data at any time by emailing scott@thescottbond.com. We will process deletion requests within 30 days. Consent records cannot be deleted prior to the four-year retention period without compromising our ability to respond to legal claims.
7. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, including encrypted data storage, secure API connections, and limited access to personal data. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Children's Privacy
Signal is intended for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a minor, please contact us immediately.
9. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, including the right to access, correct, or delete your data. To exercise these rights, contact us at scott@thescottbond.com.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. If changes are material, we will notify active Signal subscribers via SMS. Continued use of Signal after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
